Investors now fear a slowdown instead of inflation -- has the outlook really changed all that much?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – Wall Street needs some cheering up after last week. A big old hug even.

Sure, there are some things to be worried about. With oil hovering near $50 a barrel and other commodity prices much higher than last year there could be a pickup in inflation.

IBM's (Research) shocking earnings miss last week is a possible sign of weakening corporate demand for technology products and services. Retail sales for March came in much weaker-than-expected. And the trade deficit hit a record high in February -- all signs of a likely slowdown in economic growth.

But the market has also decided to ignore some good news. The Federal Reserve has hinted that aggressive interest rate hikes are unlikely in the near future. Oil prices, while still high, have come down recently. And Apple's (Research) strong earnings report indicates that many consumers are still spending.

"It seems as if we have re-entered the bizarre world in which every piece of news must be interpreted as being bad for equity investors," Tobias Levkovich, chief U.S. market strategist for Citigroup Smith Barney, wrote in a report Monday.

What makes last week's sell-off more surprising is that only a few weeks ago, investors were worried about inflation, which is typically a sign of an overheated economy -- not one that's slowing down. Now, investors fear the exact opposite scenario... a slowdown or worse.

"The market goes through these bizarre mood swings. All of a sudden, people are concerned that we're in a soft patch and that it may get worse before it gets better," said Ed Yardeni, chief investment strategist with Oak Associates, a mutual fund firm based in Akron, Ohio.
Economy does the fox-trot

So what's next for stocks? Several market pros say one thing's for certain -- expect more volatility. Simply put, conditions aren't so bad to justify another major sell-off but the outlook for the economy and earnings growth aren't rosy enough to bet on a big rally, either.

"The market is now factoring in that first-quarter earnings will likely be below consensus," said Subodh Kumar, chief market strategist with CIBC World Markets in Toronto. "And the reality is that economic growth is probably going to be between 3.5 percent and 4 percent, which is good but maybe not as strong as what some people were hoping for."

Jeffrey Saut, chief market strategist with Raymond James, described the current environment as a "fox-trot economy", meaning he expects several periods of strong economic and earnings growth to be followed by times where profits and the economy slow down a bit.

"I'm not bearish. I don't think we're going into a recession and I'm not worried about deflation" from a severe slowdown, Saut said. "But earnings growth should only be about 7 to 8 percent this year and guidance for earnings keeps coming down."

The good news is that such a scenario gives the Fed little incentive to get much more aggressive in its rate-hiking campaign.

"The Fed has worked too hard to reinvigorate the economy after a series of shocks, in our opinion, to drive everything back down," Levkovich wrote.

Saut said he expects the Fed to raise its short-term rate target another quarter-point, to 3 percent, at its next meeting on May 3. But after that, he thinks the Fed may pause to gauge the effect its rate hikes have had on the economy so far. If the Fed does raise in May, it would be its eighth increase since June 2004.

In theory, low rates should help boost the economy and corporate profits -- and thus stock prices. But even with the Fed's recent rate hikes, its federal funds rate, a short-term rate for overnight bank loans, is at 2.75 percent -- the highest since September 2001 but still well below historical norms.

"Earnings are still going to grow as interest rates and inflation remain low," Yardeni said, adding that if oil retreats further, the market will eventually treat this as positive news.
Eyes on warnings, inflation

Still, investors will likely need to see some convincing evidence that earnings growth won't deteriorate much further before being compelled to buy stocks again. The bad earnings news from IBM and profit warnings from Wal-Mart (Research) and Ford (Research) earlier this month certainly aren't reassuring.

"Major market indexes are going to remain in a range," said Saut at Raymond James. "I don't see a big trigger on the upside."

So investors may continue to seek a safe haven in the Treasury bond market, which tends to outperform stocks during periods of sluggish economic growth. To that end, bond prices surged last week as investors grew less worried about inflation, sending the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury from 4.49 percent to about 4.24 percent. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

But the inflation watch is far from over, which could lead to more volatility in the bond market as well. Two big economic reports due this week will give more clues about what impact high energy costs may be having on prices for other goods and services.

On Tuesday, the producer price index (PPI) for March will be released. Economists expect the measure of prices at the wholesale level rose 0.6 percent with the core PPI, which excludes the cost of food and energy, up 0.2 percent.

The March consumer price index (CPI) is due out on Wednesday. Economists are forecasting a 0.5 percent increase in the headline number and a 0.2 percent increase in the core CPI.

"Bonds clearly got a boost from the flight to safety. But looming on the horizon are the consumer and producer price reports and the CPI is going to be the most important," said David Joy, capital markets strategist with American Express Financial Advisors. He added that if the core CPI is above 0.3 percent, that's likely to spark renewed fears of inflation.

But all in all, strategists said investors shouldn't panic about the recent spate of disappointing news because the outlook for the market and economy hasn't changed all that drastically.

"This is more a readjusting of expectations as opposed to a readjusting of the economy," said Kumar.

The Dos and Don'ts of Newsgroups and Forums

Here are some helpful tips and links on how to use newsgroups and forums:

Newsgroups:
It is probably a good idea to think of newsgroups as "public emails" today since the Can Spam
Act is bringing the hammer down on abusers in every form, and you may not be aware of this but there is a lot of misinformation out there that give the false impression that Blogs and RSS feeds are some private domain with total carte blanche for any and all marketers. This could not be further from the truth. When you send an email to a newsgroup (generally referred to as "posting a message") the posting is available to all those who are logged into that newsgroup to view.

In most newsgroups that message can also be responded to by the readers to either the group or to the message writer personally. A moderated newsgroup (Like WordPress) is one where each message posted is subject to review and/or rejection by a moderator or group of moderators. So if you stumble onto forums like WordPress thinking you're getting a free blog to launch you sales machine, you'd better read the fine print!

Some moderated newsgroups have moderators who must view every message before posting. Often moderated newsgroups allow every message to be posted, then the moderator(s) delete inappropriate messages that appear.

WordPress has built a strong and enthusiastic membership based on their rabid hatred of not only common spam (email) but they are extremely vigilant of any form of "comment spam".

Being ignorant of the voracious revulsion towards spammers is certainly no defense if any of your postings fail their SpamKarma filters. So be wise and be careful or you could trigger their wrath. They would enjoy having your ISP kill your website site and there would be nothing you could do but pay for all the legal expense. Effusive apologies might enrage them more and actually encourage them to vent their spleen to the fullest extent of the law.

The purpose for moderating messages is simple:
Each newsgroup is on a certain topic, each post should in some way conform to that topic. When there is a post that is "off topic" (sometimes referred to as "OT"), it dilutes the effectiveness of that newsgroup for its members. More moderated newsgroups are closing membership and posting is only allowed by "approved" members. This trend toward paid membership sites follows the pay per view model. Subscribers worn out by the glut of worthless "free" memberships scurry to safer havens of valuable information at a price.

To search for a newsgroup in your topic area, use the search function built into your newsgroup browser. Here's the bottom line on what you should know about posting to Newsgroups:

Do not send unsolicited commercial postings, except where it is explicitly allowed.
Newsgroups do not allow posting of advertising messages. Posting of a brief "signature line" promoting your site is considered appropriate in almost all newsgroups.

A word to the wise...Mask your Email Address. Any email address posted on a newsgroup is available to basically everyone in the world. To reduce the amount of junk email you receive, you need to either NOT post your email address and give instructions like "reply to group" Indicate that you will read any replies in the group) or mask your email address so that spam robot harvesters can't get the correct address.

Masking is a simple process of using that address "whetstone@REMOVE-TO-MAILtvisio.com" followed by the comment "to email me remove the part "REMOVE-TO-MAIL" from my address.

This allows people to respond to you personally without responding to the group but still keeps you from receiving robot harvested spam. Who needs that garbage?

Forums:
Forums function much like newsgroups. They typically focus on a topic and can be moderated or not. Some forums are only for "members" and some are "open to all." Unlike newsgroups, almost all forums require a user to create a "user profile" in order to post. Also unlike newsgroups, forums are not based on email so the user can retain absolute annonymity if he or she chooses. To search for a forum on your particular topic, use your favorite search engine and type in your topic followed by "forum."

Pay Close attention to these things when posting to a forum:

Forums Expose you to the public. Don't reveal any personal information on a forum you would not want on the Web! Why tempt predators to stalk you? Some forums are even indexed by search engines, so remember posting your name, address, phone number and email could very well expose your private info to the entire universe.

Forum Posters are Not Necessarily experts or have any idea what they're talking about. Many of these wiseguys are adept at sounding authoritative. In forums, it's quite common to have hip sophisticate annonymous critics dominate so as to broadcast their territorial imperatives .
You haven't lived until you've been "Flamed" by an overzealous poster. Many of them may have a chip on their shoulder due to sales pitch overload and if they are loners with a misanthropic streak they feel relief when they are attacking the "evil enemy internet polluters."

Rule of Thumb: Don't ever Sell. Do as Ken Evoy does and "pre-sell" You'll come out better in the end.

Some forum junkies have lots of time to make posts and have no track record to back up their criticisms. While many forum posters really have a solid understanding of the subject matter, some do n't. Make sure you know whose advice you are following if you are getting advice through a Newsgroup. Follow the threads. They will give you a good idea as to the credibility of a forum commentator.

Forums are a great place to post articles if they are on the subject. While some forums do not allow posting of articles, many do. This can be a great way to get exposure for a new idea. I would recommend being a regular poster to the group before you begin posting articles, since many forums have a strong sense of ownership among the members and resent "newbies" from "abusing" the group.

“Many (Americans) are feeling financially squeezed and uncertain about the future."-- Mark Simenstad, Thrivent Financial's Economic Strategist
Americans' expectations for the U.S. economy in 2005, as well as for their personal financial well-being, are down sharply from a year ago, according to a Thrivent Financial national survey*. More Americans expect the U.S. economy in 2005 to grow worse rather than better (37 percent versus 33 percent), a dramatic reversal from a year earlier when twice as many believed the 2004 economy would grow better rather than worse (47 percent versus 23 percent).
This overall pessimism is also found in Americans' attitudes about their own family income and financial situation. Taking into account their income, savings and investments against financial obligations, some 44 percent say their families will not be financially better off in 2005 than in 2004 (up from 38 percent a year earlier). Those expecting a better family economic situation dropped from 57 percent to 47 percent. This is the lowest level ever recorded since 1997 in Thrivent Financial surveys.
In addition, the number of people expecting their income to decrease in the coming year doubled from a year earlier. Twenty percent expect their total family income to decrease (up from 10 percent a year ago), while only 38 percent expect it to increase (down sharply from the 51 percent recorded last year). Again, this is the lowest level ever recorded in Thrivent Financial surveys.
Those most apt to feel their 2005 financial well-being will diminish include:
· Those separated, divorced or widowed (56 percent), · Those who never attend religious services (53 percent), · Pre-retirees age 50-64 (49 percent), · Those with income of less than $35,000 (49 percent), · Women (47 percent) and · Northeasterners (47 percent).
That is the bad news, but here is the good news! Planning can help reverse this pessimism. "While many factors influence our economic futures, we know that those who plan and set financial goals are usually more confident," says Simenstad. "Careful planning can help all Americans make the most of their finances and protect themselves against changing financial circumstances."

Seriously, as China opens its doors to capitalism the question arises, "Just How Global is the Internet, Really?"
Education Distance Online debates the issue of internationalized domain names (IDN) implementation.

The Internet is built on ASCII (American Standard Code of Information Interchange) characters. This means that only ASCII characters can be keyed in to the browser's address bar, and these are in turn converted into numerical IP addresses denoting the millions of destinations on the World Wide Web.

This works fine in the English world but, for non-English speakers, they have the task of rote-learning numerical IP addresses, or the English spellings of a gazillion Web sites they want to see.

Multilingual content has swelled in cyberspace in the past decade, the method of Web-address input still revolves mainly around English.

Is it easier to teach English to the growing number of non-English speaking Internet population around the world, or do we tweak the current Domain Name System (DNS) to accommodate the language nuances of these users?

The long road to multilingualism
has been under way since the mid-1990s, but the journey has been slower than a well digger's butt in Idaho on a Christmas morning.

Tan Tin Wee, a professor with the National University of Singapore who spearheaded the launch of Pacific Internet, an ISP, designed one of the world's first multilingual domain name systems in 1996.

Five years later, Internet governing body ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) formed an IDN Committee to examine the technicalities of multilingual domain name adoption. Despite initial patent squabbles, a set of standards was finally published in March 2003.

Years after its initial conceptualization, IDNs can now be registered with domain name registries like VeriSign and I-dns.net.

I-dns.net is promoting a format that allows the entire address string to be in native characters, a method that appears to meet the need for multilingualism more fully.

Both registries pledge compliance with IETF standards and have claimed early successes with their new IDN offerings, with strong uptake in Asian markets like China, Japan and South Korea. The two companies also require users to install plug-ins before they can key in native characters in the address bar.

The online population is expected to reach 1 billion next year; speeding up the implementation of IDNs could help fuel the next chapter of the Internet's growth and open up immense opportunities for areas like e-government and e-commerce. Research already indicates slowing Internet user growth in developed countries, but in contrast, the pool is set to expand in developing countries for at least 10 years to come.

Tech monsters like Microsoft are ramping up language-localization efforts to grow their customer bases beyond developed nations. Microsoft launched a low-cost flavor of Windows XP called Starter Edition for five developing countries, and its efforts to get more users online could be further helped by incorporating an IDN-compatible plug-in in its Internet Explorer browser. Chip makers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are considering low-cost computer blueprints for developing nations.

While foreign IT vendors are going local, top-level support for implementation and education on IDNs, however, seems lacking, as efforts have been sporadic to date.

China has reportedly put its full weight behind Chinese domain names. With the mainland's economic and political clout, it will be of little surprise that authorities and companies in other parts of the world could soon join in to make the global Internet more multilingual.

PPC ALERT #3. Scan the Message/Discussion Boards

Look for patterns of words, phrases or questions that people use on discussion forums related to your product or service. These boards are tremendously valuable sources of intelligence given that most posts start off with a question followed by several responses.

You want to make sure the discussion boards you choose are both relevant and moderated so to ensure high quality and high volume posting. On the topic of online marketing and advertising - my hands-down favorite is found within this master marketer's site...

PPC ALERT #4. Search your competitors keywords

Spend some time searching down your competitors using Google, Yahoo or other search engines. You can use the toolbar extension at http://www.alexa.com to help find out sites attracting higher traffic.

For Internet Explorer users, choose the "View" and then "Source" menu options to look at the code for a particular website.

Look for the Meta Tag Keywords section as well as keyword patterns in titles and sub-heads as well as through the text for clues on top performing keywords.

You can then go back to the Keyword Suggestion tools outlined in TIP#2 to test the keyword combinations you've come up with.

PPC ALERT #5. Look at leading Direct Mail, Magazine Articles and Books

...on your market to get hints on common "trigger" keywords that pop up again and again. Try mixing and matching some of these keywords, then throw them into the tools used in Tip#2. Before long, you will have found a few gems to try out.

PPC 900 POUND GORILLA ALERT # 6. Test IT, Yes, Test and Test Again

Keyword targeting is not brain surgery nor is it an exact science. Like all marketing techniques, you have to test it. Or it Depending on your budget and how fast you want to get results, you'll need to decide on a PPC to go with. Note: You will get far faster results with the big guys - Google Adwords and Overture, so my advice is to test using these PPC's.

Narrow your keywords down to a point where you are risking .05-.80 per click rather than $2.00/click, so your exposure should be within reason.

Rock Bottom Line
Watch both the short and longer term impact of PPC. Short term, Notice traffic coming from PPC right away in your web logs - so you'll get a sense of click-through rates, and eventually sales in 1-2 weeks.

Long term, being listed in the top 3 spots on the PPC's often provides you additional exposure through special marketing arrangements each PPC has made with designated mercenary search engines.

Weeks after your initial campaign you will often start to see a significant bump in search engine activity as the result of being in the top 3 of PPC's.

Make Your PPC marketing Work Smarter and Harder.

For the vast majorityof us who don't have cash out the wazoo for marketing, stay away from following the sheep (they're lambs to slaughter) - Focus on niche keywords.
