Do You Know Your Keywords?
It’s Midnight and
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR KEYWORDS ARE?
Making Money with Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising.
Here’s the TradeVisionary Bottom Line.
Choose Your Keywords Well!
Choose too generic and you’ll lose your arse and I mean pronto! Choose too specific a term and your Monster Guru competitors will eat your lunch.
For example, let's say you offer TravelVisionary guides for sale online - here are some possible keywords with associated monthly traffic counts and top bid as of the time this article was written:
Travel: #hits (1198913) top bid: $2.13/click
Travel guide: #hits (30744) top bid: .73/click
Italy travels guide (497) top bid: .21/click
If you zip on over to the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool,
http://www.inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggest ion/
There’s well over 100 associated combinations of keyword phrases that incorporate travel - but may not even be remotely related to your product.
Also, a search under travel guide returns many search phrases including travel guide that may not properly target your customers.
Drill Down one step deeper and You benefit by finding keywords more specific to your market .
Notice This:
Cost Per Click becomes much more reasonable (that means cheaper, Less Cost, More Bang)
which means your return on investment for PPC advertising becomes much greater.
Yabba Dabba….yawn… but HOW do you find those "magic" keywords and phrases that will pull well for YOU?
Here’s where you get off your “charlie bohunkus” and roll up your sleeves. A little work won’t kill you. Besides, it pays!

PPC ALERT #5. Look at leading Direct Mail, Magazine Articles and Books
...on your market to get hints on common "trigger" keywords that pop up again and again. Try mixing and matching some of these keywords, then throw them into the tools used in Tip#2. Before long, you will have found a few gems to try out.
PPC 900 POUND GORILLA ALERT # 6. Test IT, Yes, Test and Test Again
Keyword targeting is not brain surgery nor is it an exact science. Like all marketing techniques, you have to test it. Or it Depending on your budget and how fast you want to get results, you'll need to decide on a PPC to go with. Note: You will get far faster results with the big guys - Google Adwords and Overture, so my advice is to test using these PPC's.
Narrow your keywords down to a point where you are risking .05-.80 per click rather than $2.00/click, so your exposure should be within reason.
Rock Bottom Line
Watch both the short and longer term impact of PPC. Short term, Notice traffic coming from PPC right away in your web logs - so you'll get a sense of click-through rates, and eventually sales in 1-2 weeks.
Long term, being listed in the top 3 spots on the PPC's often provides you additional exposure through special marketing arrangements each PPC has made with designated mercenary search engines.
Weeks after your initial campaign you will often start to see a significant bump in search engine activity as the result of being in the top 3 of PPC's.
Make Your PPC marketing Work Smarter and Harder.
For the vast majorityof us who don't have cash out the wazoo for marketing, stay away from following the sheep (they're lambs to slaughter) - Focus on niche keywords.
An' That's how ya do the PPC thang...
Good Luck
